The communities of SAD #22 have high expectations for their schools.   Both Reeds Brook Middle School and Samuel L. Wagner Middle School share a common curriculum and assessment program. While each school has it’s own identity they deliver the same services. The district is proud to have both middle schools accredited by the New England Associations of Schools and Colleges.

Reeds Brook Middle School

A hallmark of Reeds Brook Middle School programs is its experiential learning at each grade level. The sixth grade received a grant to attend the SEA (Schoodic Education Adventure) residential program on the Maine coast. The trip involves a three day/two night experience and includes activities such as biological inventory of a forest, a mock archeology dig, geology walk and bedrock geology mapping. The seventh grade participates in an outreach of the Camp Kieve Leadership School which includes sessions on bullying, sexual harassment, conflict resolution, stereotypes, drug and alcohol abuse, as well as participation with a climbing wall. The eighth grade ends the school year at Camp Jordan with a three day Outdoor Maine Studies Classroom camping trip that is in its 13th year. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, Penobscot and Native American cultural activities, a lobstering trip, and mountain biking. All of these experiential learning activies work toward creating a respectful, student-centered learning environment at Reeds Brook Middle School.

Extracurricular activities at Reeds Brook Middle School include interscholastic athletics, an intramurals program, and student-interest clubs and groups. The activies range from soccer, basketball, track, and softball to an anime/mange club, drama, Dance, Dance Revolution, and Age of Mythology. The school has an active Student Council, Zoey’s Room, which is an online community for girls, a MathCounts team, as well as high performing math teams. The school also has award-winning Show Choir and Jazz Band. Activities are planned to meet the many and varied needs of the middle level learner.

Reeds Brook Middle School has a strong technology focus due to one-to-one computer availability in all grades. The "Maine Learning Technology Initiative" provides laptops to all students and teachers in grades seven and eight and the school district has made the financial commitment to providing additional laptops to grade six. In addition, the school utilizes a wide variety of instructional software that is available to all students such as Accelerated Reader, BeyondBooks, SkillsTutor in Math, NoteShare, and Keynote.

Time for planned interventions in math and reading is woven into the schedule at Reeds Brook Middle School. Extra time and instruction in both math and reading takes place during the regular school day for students identified by the Student Assistance Team or as indicated by NWEA and MEA test data. Student failing to make adequate academic progress are placed in guided study halls with teachers who monitor their classwork regularly.

Samuel L. Wagner Middle School

Samuel L.Wagner Middle School is a supportive learning community committed to meeting the unique characteristics of middle level learners while achieving high student performance in a safe environment.  When you step into Wagner Middle School, you feel as if you are part of a positive learning community.  The staff and students genuinely collaborate to develop a concept they fondly and proudly refer to as Wagner Pride.  The result of this year round teamwork is an atmosphere that allows for mutual respect and certainly a positive climate.  Realizing how impressionable young adults are, the principal brings in former students, who are current high school seniors, to discuss how Wagner Pride has helped them excel.  This practice helps cement the importance of being a responsible citizen within our community and encourages students to also do their part to achieve individual success.  As a developmentally responsive middle school, Wagner holds high expectations for its students to behave as caring, responsible citizens.  Students hold food and clothing drives to benefit the local community.  They work along with the University of Maine in water testing experiments and the research and promotion of environmentally responsible behaviors like the no idling initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  The staff also recognizes the need for students to have understanding adults as advocates and guides in a positive environment.

The Wagner staff delivers a challenging curriculum through a variety of teaching and learning approaches, including a cross grade level Egg Drop, a Greek dinner theater and Poetry Slams. The expectations are high, requiring the support and full participation of the entire school community, teachers, parents, and students to meet the learning challenges.  Students are also encouraged to earn individual success with a focus on personal growth and improvement in addition to obvious successes in schoolwork and activities.  Instructional strategies are tailored to the diverse developmental stages and varied learning styles of the adolescent.  Purposeful grouping with a majority of heterogeneous class populations and a team teaching structure create a flexible schedule to optimize middle level student success.  One-to-one laptop technology increases students’ exposure to technology programming.  Extensive support services including Special Education, a 504 program, Guidance Services, reading support, Gifted and Talented programs, and the after-school tutoring program, are in place to provide accommodations, modifications and support to ensure the academic achievement of the diverse adolescent learners.

The physical and emotional wellness and safety of students is treated as an integral part of school life through health and other academic classes as well as activities and events supporting exercise and healthy lifestyles.  These include a before school exercise club, a lunch time sports program, and weekly intramurals, all of which promote lifelong physical activities.  Other school activities include an art club, drama club, band, chorus, jazz band, show choir, and interscholastic sports such as soccer, field hockey, cross-country, football, basketball, cheering, baseball, softball, and track.  Additionally, Wagner has a chess team, math team, civil rights team, and student council. These varied activities allow students a myriad of opportunities to make healthy choices, take safe risks, and experience individual success.
